Go with Your Gut: The Use of Probiotics as Adjunctive Treatment in Major Depressive Disorder

Problem: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the leading cause of disability worldwide, but approximately one-third of patients do not respond to current treatment options. Many prior studies suggest that gut microbiota have a strong influence on the brain, thus manipulation of gut microbiota could be a viable treatment option for patients with MDD. Probiotics can offer positive benefits to the gut, and a healthy gut can lead to positive benefits for the brain. Purpose: To identify the effects of probiotics as adjunctive treatment to pharmacotherapy in patients with MDD. Research Question: Does the use of probiotics as adjunctive treatment to pharmacotherapy improve symptoms in patients diagnosed with MDD? Methods: A prospective double-blind randomized controlled trial using a paired t-test to analyze improvements in the symptoms of MDD outlined by the DSM-5 (ie, depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure) based on the results of three self-reported questionnaires. Outcomes: The results will demonstrate if the use of probiotics as adjunctive treatment to pharmacotherapy will provide significantly improved symptoms of MDD compared to the control group. Benefit: To promote further exploration of the bidirectional relationship between the gut and the brain to identify additional and adjunctive treatment options for major depressive disorder.
