Rat testis has been shown to contain an intracellular receptor protein for testosterone and 5α-dihydrotestosterone (1–5) which is thought to mediate the androgenic stimulus to spermatogenesis. Further identification of the androgen receptor within specific testicular cell types has proved difficult due to their heterogeneity. Localization of receptors in germ cells and/or supporting cells would help establish the mechanism of androgen action in spermatogenesis. In this report, we have measured receptor concentrations in isolated tubules, in a germ cell-free testis obtained from prenatally irradiated rats, and in nonirradiated controls. The data suggest that the androgen receptor is present both in germ cells, interstitial and Sertoli cells.
