Membrane-bound electron transfer systems, such as NADH dehydrogenase, the bc1 complex, and cytochrome oxidase, conserve energy from oxidation-reduction reactions as a transmembrane gradient of protons. Some of these protons move directly with electron transfer; others appear to be pumped separately. Although we now have a clear picture of the sequence for electron transfer in cytochrome bc1 complexes, the mechanisms of linkage to proton flow are only beginning to emerge. This is a fundamental area for continued research in bioenergetics.
