1. 1. The specific oxidation of the carotenoid pigment Spheroidene to Spheroidenone when anaerobic cultures of Rhodopseudomonas spheroides are aerated, has been studied. 2. 2. The conversion of Spheroidene to Spheroidenone is enhanced by light and reversibly inhibited by CO. Cyanide and chloramphenicol do not affect conversion. 3. 3. A cell system capable of limited conversion has been obtained.
