In the Sussex village which he made his last earthly home, though he rigidly maintained his lifelong habits of industry, he was no recluse, and his genial frankness soon made him the honoured friend of us all.1 The sick poor in particular found in him a staunch benefactor, and he would find a few minutes in his daily ride to visit them and say a few cheery words. He was the life of our school manager meetings, and a generous patron of the education of the poor.2 He sympathised with the farmers in their troubles, and was always a promoter of the union of the classes. Though a strong Liberal, he was against disestablishment; his ardent wish was that the Church of England should be stronger, and he believed that as a fact she was growing stronger day by day.3 He rarely, even when his health was failing, missed Sunday morning service, always punctual to the minute — an alert and reverent and audible worshipper, and a steady communicant.
