Epidemiological evidence suggesting a negative correlation between carotenoid intake and cancer incidence drew considerable attention to these micronutrients as potential chemopreventive agents1,2,3. In addition, the beneficial effect of beta-carotene in treatment of photosensitive diseases stimulated its use in pharmacological doses for therapeutic purposes4,5. There is evidence from animal experiments that beta-carotene is capable of reducing cancer development6,7. Currently, a number of investigators are conducting prospective intervention studies using beta-carotene as a chemopreventive agent against a variety of human precancerous conditions in high-risk populations8.
