Vaginal endoscopy is used both as a diagnostic tool and to perform intrauterine procedures such as artificial insemination. Endoscopic examination of the vagina in the bitch is part of a complete reproductive evaluation. Instrumentation for endometrial biopsy is similar to endoscopic transcervical insemination (TCI) using the TCI scope, but instead of the catheter, biopsy forceps are passed through the cervical canal and endometrial biopsy samples are collected. Immediately after usage, the endoscope is rinsed with demineralized water. Once thoroughly rinsed, the endoscope is submerged in an enzymatic solution, for example, Alkazyme®, a combined cleaner, and predisinfection agent for metal surgical devices, for 20 minutes. The sterilization technique is selected based on the characteristics of the material used in each instrument (plastic or metal). Applications for uterine biopsy and hysteroscopy need further study to prove general usage.
