The optimization problem is mathematically expressed with the objective function to be minimized taking inequality and equality constraints into account. Numerical nonlinear programming techniques are recommended for all heat exchanger optimization problems. The optimal design of shell-and-tube heat exchangers is explained. Design variables and correlations for heat transfer and pressure drop are presented. One example with one shell-side and two tube-side passes is calculated with optimization of tube length, inside shell diameter, baffle cut, and central baffle spacing. A calculation program is attached. Further plate-fin heat exchangers are treated. First, an example from the literature with minimization of entropy generation is discussed. As a more realistic objective function, the total annual cost is recommended, which is minimized in a calculated example of a gas-to-air crossflow plate-fin heat exchanger.
