Integrated membrane processes are those that combine multiple separation sub-processes into a single-unit operation, with one or more of these sub-processes involving membrane(s) as the means for separation. This chapter reviews the application of integrated membrane processes in the area of bioseparations. Membrane-based processes are known to be benign to sensitive biological products and are generally more amenable to sterile processing of such products due to ease of material containment and minimal use of additives and reagents. Integrated membrane processes, which cut down the number of steps in a separation process, and thereby increase process efficiency and product recovery, are likely to be very attractive in the area of protein purification. The application of membranes in bioseparation has largely been focused around the purification of macromolecular biopharmaceuticals. Two types of membrane processes have dominated biological separations: microfiltration and ultrafiltration.
