Nutritional and Anti-Nutritional Constituents in Forages

Nutritional quality of forages has direct influence on health and productivity of livestock. High crude protein (CP) in forages makes rumen microflora more active and increases the efficiency of livestock to digest and assimilate the nutrients. Feeding studies have revealed that the diets sufficient in protein quantity but deficient in protein quality have negative impact on animal growth and production. Anti-nutritive compounds often show ill effects on animal health by interfering directly or indirectly in utilization of available nutrients in forages. Leguminous forages have better nutritive profile than grasses, which is mainly attributed to high protein content, balanced amino acid profile and good proportion of minerals and vitamins. The knowledge about different nutritional as well as anti-nutritional constituents will provide better option for the selection of forages to prepare nutritious and wholesome diet for livestock.
