This chapter discusses the mechanism of action, clinical uses, and adverse effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids in equine practice. NSAIDs are efficacious in the treatment of inflammation, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, and perioperative pain by blocking the production of prostaglandins. Traditional NSAIDs act by blocking the cyclooxygenase enzymes and the subsequent production of prostaglandins. The chapter describes the specific NSAIDs used in equine practice, such as flunixin meglumine, phenylbutazone, diclofenac, firocoxib, meloxicam, and grapiprant. It also describes the specific glucocorticoids used in equine practice, such as dexamethasone, prednisone, prednisolone, betamethasone, triamcinolone, and isoflupredone. Two common glucocorticoids for equine inhalational therapy include fluticasone and beclomethasone. Both glucocorticoids are supplied in a metered dose inhaler that can be used with various equine inhaler systems.
