Assisted reproduction techniques available in dogs and cats include artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer. This chapter addresses AI via a surgical approach. Intrauterine AI by laparotomy is performed most commonly using frozen/thawed semen, but occasionally with fresh-chilled and fresh semen. Reasons for surgical AI include the desire for an exploratory examination of the reproductive tract at the time of insemination in bitches with a history of undiagnosed infertility or those with possible cystic endometrial hyperplasia. Timing of the AI surgery is dependent on the type of semen to be inseminated. As an alternative to laparotomy, laparoscopic techniques have been described. The principles of intrauterine AI in queens are similar to those used in bitches. AI via laparotomy or laparoscopy is recommended at just over 30 hours. For both techniques, semen should be injected into both uterine horns.
