The biopharmaceutical, biofuels, health-foods, nutraceuticals, agriculture, and environmental biotechnology industry are major economic contributors to society with sales in the billions of dollars [1]. The biopharmaceutical industry alone had annual revenues exceeding US$ 200 billion, with many biopharmaceuticals products in the healthcare field including proteins, peptides, and nucleic acids and is now a significant sector in the global market place [2]. Most biotechnological products are obtained from natural or genetically engineered microorganisms. Many important biopharmaceuticals such as monoclonal antibodies, hormones, and blood factors are manufactured using recombinant DNA technologies.
